Omron Blood Pressure Monitor - 10 Most Popular

The Omron blood pressure monitor is one of the most popular home blood pressure monitors on the market. And with consumers becoming more aware of the consequences of high blood pressure, home blood pressure monitors have become more popular than ever.

Omron is one of the most highly-recognized name brands associated with blood pressure monitors, and for good reason. Not only are these monitors available at most pharmacies and drug stores, but there are also numerous styles with various features from which to choose. Arm cuffs, wrist bands, and even a specialty woman's blood pressure cuff are just a few of the varieties offered. In addition, many models offer the ability to interchange cuff sizes.

As a primary care physician, I've seen a lot of BP monitors that my patients bring to the office to check for accuracy and other features. This one seems to be the best.

The easy to apply cuff, auto inflation, its accuracy, the memory, the averaging feature, the AC converter all make it worth the slightly higher price over other Omrons, which I consider the most accurate brand. Since I too have high blood pressure, I decided to buy one myself!

I have a Microlife desktop model that I bought at Costco. The OMRON and the desktop are usually within a few points Systolic and Diastolic and on mark for pulse. The OMRON locks up when you try to use it for more than a couple of readings in short succession.

Also, it seems to give inordinately low readings at times. It is very sensitive to positioning relative to heart level but I think it also is VERY sensitive to wrist positioning. The Beep to help in positioning is almost inaudible unless you are in a very quiet space. Good product for mobility but I would also have am arm cuff model to check accuracy.

I have had 3 blood pressure cuffs. This one is the best. It stores measurements including pulse. Wrist cuffs are a waste of money and can give you inaccurate information. Bicep cuffs are the best. Omron has a very good reputation among health professionals.

A word of caution, you need to use the cuff properly and to always use it the same way. It is also important to take several measurements (2 a day) when you are measuring trends. And you need to average the results for 4-5 days.

If you do this you can manage your blood pressure through a combination of drugs, exercise and diet. A good set of records will allow you to measure your progress. For example, if you want to know the benefit of an exercise program (benefit in reducing BP) you can measure this. The same is true of low sodium diet.

This cuff is very good and with the AC adapter you can make many measurements and depend on the consistency of the measurement if not the accuracy. Consistency is important.

I am a clinical pharmacist and I bought this primarily to show my patients how to check their blood pressure (BP) at home. I have seen quite a few BP machines my patients use and I usually check the machine readings against my own which is done manually. The HEM-712C is one that is inexpensive but gives accurate readings. Do keep in mind that the literature suggests that most machines made after 2000 should be accurate and technique matters more:

There are many iterations of the HEM-712C, with some re-branded by other companies. They all generally has the same good accuracy, whether they are older or newer models, from my experience validating them for my patients. The newer models that appears in the past couple of years appear to be just as accurate. There is no need to get the more expensive models, which only offer more functions. Some more expensive models offer two cuff sizes, large and regular, which may be useful for household with different arm sizes.

By and large, customers are extremely happy with their Omron blood pressure monitors. Ratings for the majority of models average between eighty and one hundred percent satisfaction. Some things most loved about the monitors are accuracy of blood pressure readings, simplicity of operation, and quality of materials used.

Instructions were clear and concise. People were pleased that the average longevity of one set of batteries was between three months and a year. Consumers who were hard of hearing also appreciated this alternative to the stethoscope.

A small number of owners were not as pleased with their purchases. The biggest complaint regarded inaccurate blood pressure readings on lower-end models. All of these complaints mentioned low readings; none mentioned readings that were too high. It was also reported that upper arm cuffs appeared to give more accurate readings than did wrist cuffs.

This monitor appears to be a high quality device. The device's memory capabilities allow it to store 100 sets of measurement values for each of two users, plus 8 weeks worth of weekly averages for morning and evening readings for each of two users.

As one might expect of a device with fairly elaborate options like those, it has a somewhat complex and non-intuitive user interface. This monitor would be overkill for someone who's only interested in making an occasional spot-check of his or her blood pressure, and will likely be a source of frustration for anyone who's not comfortable with high-tech gadgets.

Beyond that, my only complaint with the unit is its user manual. This is a 50-page booklet, and you'll want to keep it on hand if you intend to use any of the monitor's options beyond the most basic. Unfortunately, it's quite badly written. In no particular order, here are some of my peeves with the manual:

This monitor is larger than those I have previously used, but the size is a plus for me. Rather than putting it into a drawer, out of sight, as I tend to do with the small ones, I am keeping this on a small bed-side table where its presence reminds me to use it. The large, easily read screen, is also a plus for my aging eyes.

Most important, the readings that I am getting correspond to those I get from a doctor who has been taking my blood pressure for so long that I don't get the elevated, nervousness-related readings that are gotten when I am in new situations.

The cuff fits my arm well and the band is easily attached. The band is wider than those on the small monitors I have used, but I find that helpful in attaching it.

Displayed when the unit completes its work are the systolic bp, the diastolic bp, and the pulse. Also shown on the screen throughout the process is an "ok" if the cuff is properly attached, and there is a light that comes on only if an abnormal heart beat is detected.<

I purchased the Omron HEM-711 after turning 40. I have a family history that made me interested in monitoring my blood pressure, and I want a unit that had received high ratings for accuracy.

I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the Omron is to set up and use. I especially like the memory feature showing the blood pressure reading, pulse, and the time of day of the reading.

Taking my blood pressure is a very simple process. I simply slide on the cuff, lining the arrow up with my upper arm, and push the blue button. The machine takes care of the rest. The large numbers are easy to read. I am able to see my blood pressure, as well as my heart rate.

Now, I have a week's worth of readings to help me be better informed before my next physical.

(December 2009 update)
I have now owned my Omron for almost 2 years, and am still impressed with the continued accuracy and ease of use! This was an excellent purchase.

Which are The Best Omron Blood Pressure Monitors?

The most popular models are mid-line varieties. Ironically, several people opted to buy the manually-inflated cuff over its automatically-inflated counterpart inflation for fear of the motor wearing out. As it turns out, a malfunctioning automatic inflation device was one of the greatest complaints for the fancier models.

When considering the purchase of this brand of blood pressure monitor, the best blood pressure monitor for the average person is a middle grade, upper arm model with manual inflation. This will give the consumer with the most accurate blood pressure readings and provide a machine with the longest life and greatest durability.

I like what Omron did with this BP monitor.

Easy to read display
Has memory to log readings over time
Computer interface to download memory (print or email to your doc.

Instruction could be clearer
Included software could have a clearer user interface

To the Engineers: I'd like to see the next model have a wireless way to transfer the data. I travel which is why I bought a compact monitor. My laptop case has too many cables already and now I have another one. Consider WiFi, Bluetooth, SD card. Also a backlit display would be nice. I would pay more for these features.

As a former Biomed tech that tested and repaired 100's of BP Monitors I can say with some authority that this is a winner.

I am a young man who has, unfortunately, been beset by a number of cardiovascular issues. After bypass surgery it was eventually found I had costochondritis (inflammation of chest cavity, chronic pain) and high blood pressure. My doctors have been harping on me to start tracking my blood pressure every day so they know what exactly they are dealing with and take preventative measures from there. Looking around I found the 7 series which seemed both reasonably priced and well recommended by the community, a wonderful combination.

Upon receiving the device it was clear from the instructions provided how to, easily, use it. It does mention, as doctors do, when during the day and when not to take your blood pressure. It is EXTREMELY easy to use, simply follow the cuff instructions and press start...that's it. Now, I understand some people want to use the built in memory system to track their blood pressure etc. This will take a bit more work considering it requires more input and such. Some people are worr

This is a nice, portable way to check on blood pressure.

There are two cuffs, one regular and one large sized. A gray carrying case holds the unit.

The display is very large and easy to read. Showing blood pressure and pulse. There is a symbol indicating too much movement, which means you'll need do re-take your pressure. There is a symbol for irregularheatbeat and a warning symbol forhypertension.

I'm thrilled with this product, the only fault I could find was it hums a bit loudly. Still it is a quality monitoring unit, much better than ones I've seen at drug stores.

Highly recommended.

Most of the monitors produced by Omron will contain everything that you typically need to test your blood pressure. This would include the blood pressure monitor itself, a cuff (some will contain both a standard size as well as a large size), an instructional manual, batteries (in some cases), a cuff guide (for sizing), and a zipper case for storage.

Are Arm Blood Pressure Monitors Accurate?

If you avoid the cheaper models, the average arm blood pressure monitor, although not as accurate as the monitor in your doctor's office, is generally accurate. In most cases, where readings seem to wildly be out of kilter, the problem is due to the patient operating the monitor in an improper manner.

Your Blood Pressure And Pulse

Blood pressure monitoring takes into account both your heart rate (i.e., how many times your heart is beating per minute) and the pressure being exerted on your blood vessels by the beating of your heart. Your blood pressure can be affected by many things which is why you want take your resting blood pressure. External factors such as exercise, anxiety, dehydration, fasting, etc. can give you readings that are artificially low or high. In addition, although some machines have irregular heartbeat detection, most blood pressure equipment will give you inaccurate reading for this condition.

Omron Wrist Blood Pressure Monitor Review

omron hem 650 wrist blood pressure monitorThe Omron hem-650 wrist blood monitor - wrist blood monitors are notoriously less accurate than the standard upper arm blood pressure devices. With that being said, if you do decide to opt for a wrist blood pressure monitor, this Omron model is one of the best. In fact, in Europe, it is one of the few such monitors approved by the BHS (British Hypertension Society).

Because wrist blood pressure monitors have a reputation for unreliability, it is even more important that you follow the manufacturer's instructions to get accurate readings. With most wrist monitors you will be required to position your body in a particular manner while taking the reading. As an example, the Omron hem-650 requires that you keep your wrist at heart level while taking the measurement. As with regular monitors, inaccurate use of a wrist monitor is the primary reason for inaccurate readings.
