Automatic Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

Using an automatic digital blood pressure monitor, instead of a manual blood pressure device, is an important tool in tracking your blood pressure. The reason is that many consumers are intimidated by the thought of using a manual blood pressure. Conversely, an automatic blood pressure monitor can make the process trivial.

See examples of popular digital blood pressure monitors for home use below:

It is important to know current levels because blood pressure is an important indicator of health. These home blood pressure kits make tracking your blood pressure levels easier than ever. In addition, digital blood pressure monitor accuracy has improved by leaps and bounds over the last ten or so years. In fact, they have improved so much that, these days, digital blood pressure monitors for home use are virtually taking over the marketplace.

Home based monitoring kits that allow you to take your blood pressure at home are extremely useful in a number of cases. One case is "white-coat hypertension", a condition in which anxiety causes your blood pressure to be higher than it normally would be if you were in your normal home or work environment.

A second case is the reverse, where your readings are actually lower at a doctor's office than it would be at home. This is called "masked hypertension." And, lastly, lots of people have higher blood pressure in the morning than they do the rest of the day. A home based blood pressure monitoring system eliminates these variables that affect blood pressure and allow the healthcare professionals to get a better sense of your "real" blood pressure.

If you have consistent high blood pressure, it is important to monitor it as it changes throughout the day. It is also helpful to have a method of automatically recording its findings so the doctor can make an evaluation as to how it reacts to varying circumstances.

Automatic digital monitors are very compact and because of this they are extremely portable. Most are also easy to use at home. In general, these devices consist of two basic elements - an inflatable cuff and a small unit with a digital readout to show results.

As a primary care physician, I've seen a lot of BP monitors that my patients bring to the office to check for accuracy and other features. This one seems to be the best. The easy to apply cuff, auto inflation, its accuracy, the memory, the averaging feature, the AC converter all make it worth the slightly higher price over other Omrons, which I consider the most accurate brand. Since I too have high blood pressure, I decided to buy one myself!

I was looking for a device that would be easy for my 88 year-old mother to use on her own. She was told to monitor her blood pressure, but can't use the public style because they are set to test the left arm. Because of prior surgery, her left arm can't be used. So, when looking for the wrist type, this monitor had all the qualities I was looking for. When we received it and showed Mom how to use it, she found it easy to use and easy to read because the screen uses large print. She doesn't have to write anything down. She takes it to her doctor and he can read back through the last 90 days (one reading per day). Because she has an occasional problem with ventricular tachycardia, the monitor also lets her know if the heart is beating irregularly with a simple picture.

The cuff beeps when you have it positioned properly for inflation. This isn't a function that is useful for Mom, because she is hard of hearing. But, fortunately, the beep isn't really necessary because positioning is easy for everyone--fi

When I was researching which monitor to get, I debated between the Omron HEM-780 and this one. For whatever reason, the HEM-780 sells more on Amazon. The only advantages I could see, however, were that it had a larger cuff, a so-called Comfit cuff, and saves the last 90 readings rather than the last 60. What sold me on this unit, however, was a feature that the HEM-780 doesn't have -- an irregular heart beat indicator (not mentioned in the Amazon.com description but shown in the PDF of the owner's manual at www.omronhealthcare.com). Since the 9"-13" upper arm cuff was fine for me, I bought this unit and it's perfect for my needs. The Omron technology is otherwise the same for both units and the cuff on this unit is also comfortable so no need for the Comfit cuff. If you need a larger cuff (up to 17"), buy the HEM-780. If not, save the $12, get the same technology with the added bonus of the irregular heart beat indicator.

Choosing the Right Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

With so many monitors from which to choose, it is easy to become confused. In choosing the right monitor, there are certain things to keep in mind.

Automatic monitors are available with either an arm or wrist cuff, for your convenience. When selecting an electronic monitor, make sure to find a well-fitting cuff size, or readings will not be as accurate. Make sure to select a cuff that is appropriate for your body size. For example, larger people will want to select a larger cuff.

The advantage of automatic blood pressure monitors is that they provide automatic inflation and deflation of the arm or wrist cuff. For the elderly or those who have debilitating illnesses such as arthritis, this is one less thing for them to have to be concerned about. It eliminates the need for you to inflate blood pressure monitor by hand. It happens automatically.

Digital monitors also have a display screen that shows helpful information during and after the reading. Select a unit that shows the amount of information desired and in a format that you will understand. It is important to remember to choose a monitor that is comfortable and easy to operate. Also, choose a display screen that can be clearly seen and read. Fortunately, this is not usually a problem, as most of the mainstream models have large, easy to read displays.

An irregular heartbeat can cause some blood pressure monitors to give inaccurate readings. So, if you have a condition such as mitral valve prolapse which can often cause the heart to beat in an irregular pattern, look for features in the monitor such as irregular heartbeat detection. This way it will be able to automatically adjust the blood pressure and pulse readings so that you still get accurate readings.

Digital Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors

For those with limited mobility, injuries or extensive pain, wrist cuff monitors provided added comfort and convenience. A wrist blood pressure monitor is one of the easiest models to use. Unfortunately, even though the wrist digital blood pressure monitor devices are more accurate than ever, they are still more prone to error than arm blood pressure monitors. This is not a fault of the technology. Rather it is because measuring upper arm blood pressure, in general, will give you a more accurate reading.

Using an automatic digital blood pressure monitor is very easy. Just wrap the cuff on your arm or wrist, and press a button. Blood pressure readings are quick, and only take a few seconds.

Home Blood Pressure Monitors Don't Take The Place Of Doctor's Visits

It is well to keep in mind, however, that using a home blood pressure device should, in no way, take the place of regular doctor's visits. For one thing, even though these home devices are incredibly useful, they are less expensive and, therefore, less accurate than the ones in your doctor's office.

Secondly, even the most accurate of these devices will need re-calibration or repairing over its lifetime - something that most consumers will fail to do. What this means is that, even if the machine is accurate when you purchase it, it will gradually lose accuracy over time.

Nevertheless, using a blood pressure monitor is a good way to keep an eye on health and provide peace of mind. Having one handy will help you keep track of your blood pressure, understand more precisely what changes affect it, and provide medical professionals with more information about how to control it.

Lifesource UA-767t Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

This ingenious auto-inflation monitor takes advantage of speech synthesizers in that it actually talks to you. For those who have eyesight problems or trouble reading information off of monitors, the UA-767T will verbally tell you what your blood pressure is. Once it has taken your blood pressure, the model will tell you your blood pressure and pulse. It will, optionally, do this four times and then shut itself off automatically.

LifeSource UA-787EJ Quick Response Digital Blood Pressure Monitor

lifesource blood pressure ua787ej
This Lifesource monitor does not have an audible readout like the UA-767t. It does, however, have a slew of other very useful features. For one, it has an alarm. So if you are a person who typically loses track of time and forgets to take medicines and so forth, it can remind you at set intervals that it's time to take your blood pressure. You can set as many as 3 separate alarms.

Secondly, this is a blood pressure monitor with memory. It stores the last 60 blood pressure readings in memory and displays a readout of the averages. Thirdly, it has an irregular heartbeat feature that adjusts readings automatically for those with irregular heartbeats. And, lastly, it has a pressure rating indicator. This rates your blood pressure while taking your height and weight into account. This is considered to be one of the best lifesource digital blood pressure monitor devices.

Cross tested this with another and it comes out accurate. It is billed as a portable, but it seems a little big for travel. I thought it would be smaller. The readout part of the monitor of it is 8.5" long, and about 2.5" in diameter. Appears to be built to last. Comes with a nice travel pouch.

I am a clinical pharmacist and I bought this primarily to show my patients how to check their blood pressure (BP) at home. I have seen quite a few BP machines my patients use and I usually check the machine readings against my own which is done manually. The HEM-712C is one that is inexpensive but gives accurate readings. Do keep in mind that the literature suggests that most machines made after 2000 should be accurate and technique matters more:

1) Know how to use your machine. Read the manual.
2) Sit down for a least 5 minutes before checking your BP
3) Do not talk while checking BP. The sensor can pick up the vibration
4) When you are have a full stomach, or need to go to the restroom, readings are not accurate
5) Do not wear tight clothing or cross your legs when checking BP

(Note: wrist and finger BP machine are generally not as accurate)

There are many iterations of the HEM-712C, with some re-branded by other companies. They all generally has the same good accuracy, whet

I got this blood pressure monitor for my husband's use--he is a physician with high blood pressure. He was not interested in using it to monitor his own blood pressure, but was very interested in using it in his clinic, as he had the manual type (called a sphygmomanometer) and his nurse was showing signs of carpal tunnel syndrome from manually pumping it up for each patient. So I agreed that he could use it there if he would write a review for me. Although this will not give feedback on the use of this monitor for individual use, I think that the review by a physician will be worthwhile and add something to the many reviews already published here. Here is his review:

"We just started using the Omron BP785, Series 10, blood pressure monitor in our medical clinic. We have tried other automatic blood pressure monitors before and were not satisfied as the readings were erratic at times. We have been impressed with the accuracy and ease of use of the Omron device.

The device is small, light, and has

I've owned/used several other blood pressure meters over the years, including ones from Omron and LifeSource. The older units look pretty basic compared to this latest Omron, which provides significant more computerized functionality than the older units. However, this does come at the cost of greater complexity.

Good things about the new Omron:

* "TruRead" mode, which automatically takes 3 sequential readings and averages them. I always did this manually with my older units anyway because the readings would differ slightly from time to time, but this one does it with one touch of a button, and then computes the average for you.

* Cuff is very nice: broad and stiff, which I find much easier to apply.

* Automatically determines if you have applied the cuff correctly.

Things that are not so good:

* It has various computational abilities such as a memory, ability to keep history for morning & evening readings, etc. I suppose this could provide some value to those who are

I was very excited to be able to review this product as I have high blood pressure and have searched for years for an easy to use, accurate monitor. Years ago, the best I could find in the marketplace were upper arm, clunky automatic blood pressure monitors that were difficult to use and produced wild, varying results. The Omron Bp652 is an incredible leap forward for accurate and precise home monitoring of one's blood pressure via a wrist monitor. I of course need to state at the beginning of this review that if you have hypertension, you need to be under a doctor's care and this product does not replace a physician's care, however, it is a wonderful tool for monitoring at home how well your meds are , or are not, keeping your blood pressure under control.

To test the accuracy of this monitor, I took it with me to my doctor's office. My physician measured my bp as 120/81. Minutes later, I used the Omron which gave a measurement of 121/83. That is remarkably close to my physicians bp measurement. Now,

Being a nurse, i've used all sorts of makes and models to monitor blood pressure, including the self application type. Most are flawed by poor unstable connectors, tubes too short to reach between patient and device, clumsy to wrap, the air supply knob is either too tight or too loose, or electrical cords too short to be practical, etc. I was hesitant, skeptical and reluctant to pay this much. (I don't mind so much if it just works!)

Now that the OMRON DLX Automatic Comfort Cuff has been in use for almost a month, it has proven it's worth!
All the cords/connections are ample and stable. The reading is accurate and easy to obtain, even one-handed. It stays put when placed on the upper arm above the elbow, is comfortable and easy to complete the velcro closure. The memory allows comparison over a significant period of time and is a handy feature.

I got this monitor to keep track of my blood pressure so that I could give the printed reports to my doctor. I have one that I got from Sharper Image that is easy to use but you can't upload readings to a computer. The one from Sharper Image was also not very accurate when compared to using a regular doctor grade cuff with a stethoscope.

The Omron monitor is much easier to use than the Sharper Image one, is easier to ensure the proper position and the uploading of the readings is very easy. I took the Omron monitor to my doctor to have her calibrate it against her measurements and the Omron monitor was nearly identical. Based on that and the printed reports, I was taken off my blood pressure medication!
